The desire to remain healthy for some people is extraordinary. Meet the 83-year-old Mark Shields, who has proved age is just a number.

His transformation has inspired many fitness freaks to hug healthy diets and lifestyles. The most striking thing about Shields is his dedication to avoiding drinking since 1978, which helped him lose weight.

When was the last time you had a sip of a drink?

Step Down as Friday Night Regular

Mark Shields Career

Shields is an American political columnist and commentator. With a long history of work experience, he is one of the reputed columnists for PBS NewsHour. After a successful tenure of over 33 years, he stepped down from the PBS NewsHour’s weekly Shields and Brooks discussion segment.

He shared his workstation with David Brooks. Previously, he worked with David Gergen and Wall Street Journal’s Paul Gigot.

Shields says:

“For 33 years, thanks to a large risk taken by Jim Lehrer and Robert MacNeil in 1987, I’ve had the best job in Washington journalism.”

The self-written article by Shields shocked everyone. He disclosed how he got away from drinking entirely. To be exact, he hasn’t touched alcohol since 1987.

According to Shields, avoiding drinking habit helped him to lose weight. Maybe, he has his reasons to give up drinking health-wise. Nevertheless, it’s amazing how he managed to do so as he was a regular drinker in the past.

Shields remembers those days as one of the gloomy days of his life. His drinking partner, John R, described how he failed to carry out as a good father, husband, friend, and employee because of drinking habits.

The Decision That Changed His Career and Life

Mark Shields Young Age

The decision to quit drinking for good is what made Shields a successful media person. It’s hard to keep going after the ’50s. Yet he pulled it off as he worked till the age of 83. The father of one went from an over-weight alcoholic person to fitness conscious man.

Thanks to his decision, he got slimmer and efficient in his work life. Most importantly, the reason for his dry spell was due to his health concerns. Gone are the days when he was lagged behind his drinking problems.

Shields is currently enjoying his retirement. However, it hasn’t stopped him to provide insights on the Friday night analysis, despite not being regular on the show.

Sara Just, an executive producer and WETA SVP for PBS NewsHour, told people:

“Mark Shields’s deep insight, good humor and profound humanitarianism come through in all of the staff, will miss his Friday night analysis and wisdom.”

Mark Shields Colleague

Shields might have stopped consuming alcohol due to health concerns. Without a doubt, it has made him slimmer and prolonged his youth to some extent.

Shield said:

“To all our dedicated professionals at the PBS NewsHour, this has been, in addition to great fun, the most rewarding professional experience of my, admittedly checkered, career, and viewers of the NewsHour who have regularly informed, corrected, and encouraged me, thank you.”
